What to wear when we have four seasons in one day

Let’s talk about transitional dressing. If there’s one time of year when sorting your wardrobe really pays off, it’s now.

This in-between season period is tricky as the weather changes from chilly to balmy to rainy in a matter of hours. Sounds like a typical week in our current climate, doesn’t it? That’s why it’s also the best time of year to invest in timeless pieces you’ll reach for again and again.

Brands build their Autumn collections from July with a focus on workwear. Right now the shops are full of wearable new styles that will refresh both your office and home wardrobes.

Finding pieces that work today but also carry you effortlessly into the colder weeks ahead is a challenge. The secret is to strike a balance: choose items that nod to new-season trends but have real staying power.

I’ve spent years as both a fashion buyer and a stylist refining what those key pieces are. Here are my go-to recommendations for transitional dressing:

1.Fine-Gauge Knits

Layering is key in Autumn so lightweight sweaters and cardigans are the perfect pieces. Wear them solo on warmer days, then slip a tee underneath or add a blazer when the chill kicks in. Cotton blends and ultra-fine merino are my favourites. If you’re feeling bold, try a pop of colour; if not, neutrals will always serve you well.

2.Lightweight Trousers

You can’t go wrong with a relaxed cut this season . Pair with flats now, then switch to boots later. Look for trousers with a high wool content as they naturally regulate temperature and transition beautifully with the weather.

3.Trench (or Rainproof Coat)

A trench mac is the ultimate autumn investment as it is both stylish and practical. Maxi-length, loose-cut styles can be thrown over almost anything, making them a no-brainer for rainy days and pre Winter coat conditions.

4.Statement Jacket

From leather and suede to bombers, checks, denim and boho-inspired shape, this season has a jacket for everyone. Find the one you love and that matches your personal style. It’s the easiest way to give your outfits an instant style upgrade.

5.Leather Flats

When sandals feel too summery but boots feel too heavy, leather flats bridge the gap perfectly. Ballet flats and loafers are equally on-trend right now, choose whichever fits your lifestyle but be sure they work with your current wardrobe too.

This time of year is all about versatility, layering and choosing wearable fabrics. A few key pieces will transition you seamlessly through the weather shifts while keeping your style looking modern and pulled together. I find having one or two pieces I love ready to go for Autumn makes the change of season so much easier to embrace.
