What do your clothes say about you?

What do your clothes say about you?

We usually choose our words carefully when we speak with people, but how much time do you spend choosing what to wear each day? Most people don’t give their outfits direction — they just throw something on and hope for the best.

But here’s the thing: the way you dress speaks before you do.

And if your wardrobe is saying “tired, rushed, mismatched” — that’s what people will hear.

Dressing with intention doesn’t mean following trends or spending a fortune. It means deciding how you want to show up, and letting your style do some of the heavy lifting.

  • Want to look more put-together?
  • Want to feel confident in the boardroom?
  • Want to stop second-guessing your outfits?

That starts with a wardrobe that has direction — built around you, not what’s on the high street this season.

Take my client Susannah she recently asked me to create outfits to pack for her business trip to Paris. We run through her itinerary of course, but the crucial question I ask her is ‘What message do you want to send?’

We discussed the breakfast meeting with her peers where her message was ‘approachable’, the presentation she gave to clients where her message was ‘authoritative’ and her message for the leadership dinner which was ‘chic and understated’.

In all Susannah needed 15 outfits and we considered the intention of every single one – even the Sports Star themed team games session – yes, really!

‘We nailed it!” was Susannah’s feedback after her trip.

Here is a sample of three outfits I put together for the trip:

Here’s some key points to note when creating outfits:-

  • The colours you wear influence how others perceive you
  • Softer colours such as pink are perceived as being friendly and approachable. The pink sleeveless jacket fulfils Susannah’s brief whilst looking professional
  • Blue is perceived as being professional, trustworthy and authoritative hence the blue suit for the presentation
  • Use accessories to add personality to an outfit. They are great talking points too
  • The bold yellow shoes exude confidence and ensure Susannah stands out. They add a modern Summery twist to the navy suit
  • Never wear anything that isn’t comfortable or makes you fidget e.g. footwear you can’t walk in or a tight waistband!
  • Always consider if the garment fabric is up to the job. Paris will be hot so I’ve selected natural fibres for daywear. The ecru skirt and navy suit are linen and the yellow sweater is 100% cotton so won’t show perspiration.
  • Jewellery is a great way to add the finishing touch but avoid any that clunks if presenting e.g. stacks of bangles
  • A touch of sparkle is a great way to take a dress from day to evening. I’ve used subtle accessories so they don’t overpower Susannah as, in her words, she didn’t want to look ‘too bling!’

Taking time to consider your outfit and the message behind it ensures you walk into a room with confidence.
