How to prolong the life of your garments

How to prolong the life of your garments

Is this common wardrobe item leaving a bad impression?

This is something I find in many of the wardrobes that I edit. I’m not talking about crocs for a change because thankfully I don’t come across so many of them. I’m talking about wire hangers which do, quite literally, leave a bad impression on your clothes.

They damage the fabric especially on the shoulders and over time lead to the whole garment looking crumpled as they lose their shape. They also become a tangled mess in packed wardrobes which wastes precious time in the morning!

Wardrobe maintenance is key to making a good impression. It’s all very well having a wardrobe full of beautiful clothes but if you don’t look after them, they won’t stay that way. There are a few gadgets I always recommend to my clients and use myself that will prolong the life of your garments:

5 gadgets that will prolong the life of your clothes and footwear

1.Non slip Hangers

Velvet coated hangers stop the garment slipping off and they are thin so don’t take up too much space. Use wooden hangers for heavy garments like coats and jackets but never hang knitwear as it loses its shape.

2.Lint roller

You need one of these if you have a pet or long hair. They remove fluff and hair from garments in no time!

3.Debobbler or fabric shaver

Most knits will develop piling (the correct name for bobbly bits) over time due to wear and tear. This removes them by shaving them off and so ensures your garments don’t look scruffy.
Note: If your knits have a massive amount of piling and you haven’t worn them much then it’s usually a fault with the yarn and they should be returned to the shop.

4.Knitwear/cashmere protectors

If you’ve ever had a cashmere jumper ruined by moths then you know the damage these nasty creatures can do. I often advise clients to store knitwear all year round in these bags if their wardrobe space is vulnerable to moths. Even if you don’t have them in your home it’s always best to store knits away in warmer months.

5.Shoe trees

Shoes trees keep footwear in shape, stop the leather wrinkling and soak up moisture. To get the maximum benefit from them you need to insert them into shoes within an hour of taking them off. These sponge ones are useful for most ladies shoes styles and are great for travelling as they are lightweight.
