Three shoes styles I would never take on holiday – and three I would

Do you take 10 pairs of shoes for a two week holiday?
When suitcase space is at a premium the last thing you want to do is carry unnecessary luggage. Shoes, in particular, can be heavy and awkward so you need to choose the ones you pack with care.

You need the right styles to nail your outfits but avoid bringing styles you’ll wear only once. The shoes you pack have to be versatile, comfortable and, unless you are happy looking like a tour guide during your stay, stylish as well.

I’ve spent a fair bit of time working out the best shoes for (most) holidays as many clients ask me to help them pack for trips. I’ve also got a husband who thinks that 5kg luggage space is too much so I’ve developed the art of packing lightly.

Here are the three styles I would never take on holiday and the three I would:-

Shoes I would never pack for holiday:-

Heels

Cobbled streets and old paving stones just don’t mix well with heels. It’s lovely to take a relaxed stroll whilst on holiday but not so relaxing in heels.

Ballet flat

Most holiday wardrobes consist of mid-ish length styles and the proportions are all wrong when worn with ballet flats. They are enclosed which is not good in hot climates, plus many high street styles are constructed like slippers – so not good for supporting feet!

Boots of any kind

I get it, your cowboy boots look so good with that dress. I realise this makes them tempting to pack but you’ll only end up feeling hot and bothered when you’re wearing them. Even high tops can be uncomfortable in the heat especially if they are canvas.

And here’s what to pack instead:-

Birkenstocks

They are sturdy, comfortable and work with everything. The other bonus is that they are a useful style to wear to the airport as they slip on and off easily.

Espadrilles

There are some gorgeous and varied espadrille styles around. If you need some height for your holiday outfits then a wedge style is perfect but there are lots of great flat styles around too. I’m a big fan of the Castaner range.

Leather thongs or flip flops

The plastic flip flops are good for the pool but a leather pair is great for evenings. The v-shaped front is very flattering as it elongates the legs so this is a great style if you have heavy calves and ankles.
