Rain’s gonna come! There’s no getting away from it, so you may as well be prepared. Having a raincoat that you love wearing AND that actually works will go some way to making getting caught in the rain more bearable.
If you’re in the market for a new raincoat you’ll need to know whether you should buy a waterproof or showerproof one. If your are not sure of the difference here is an outline to help you.
Shower proof or water resistant rainwear
The raincoat will have a water repellent coating and will prevent you from getting wet if caught in a shower. It is not designed for being out in heavy rain for a long period or for going fishing! Most high street brands rainwear is showerproof and it works perfectly well for commuting and wearing outside in the rain for short periods.
Fully waterproof rainwear
The raincoat is made from fabric that is completely waterproof and for that reason it usually has a rubbery texture. The garment seams will also be taped to stop water seeping in. They are made by specialist brands and are generally more expensive then most high street raincoats.
Ensure you choose the right one for your lifestyle by focusing on when and where you’ll wear your raincoat. Also, beware of garments that look like rain coats but have no water resistance whatsoever – there are too many around! Always check the label or online description to see if it offers any protection.
