I hope you have had a great start to the year. My good start has been finally feeling back to normal after being wiped out with a bug over Christmas.
The pressure to reinvent ourselves can feel huge at the start of a new year. Whilst I agree that it’s a good time to reflect on the year ahead, big resolutions such as ‘overhaul my style’ can be overwhelming and are likely to fall by the wayside by February.
If you’ve read Atomic Habits, you’ll know that it’s the small things you do, day in, day out, that have the biggest impact.
Implementing daily or weekly habits to improve your wardrobe means you’re far more likely to stick with them. Not only that, but the compound effect of these small actions is where the real magic happens. Before you know it, your wardrobe feels less stressful and more enjoyable.
Here are 5 simple habits that will help you get there:
1.Do a daily audit
Each time you get dressed, notice if any items don’t feel good anymore. Maybe they are worn, don’t fit or are out-of-date. Pop them straight into a “review” pile or bin liner.
2.Keep a note of what you love wearing
Whether it’s a notes app or a quick snap, keep track of styles and outfits you feel great in. These pieces are the key to defining and developing your personal style.
3.Notice your struggles
Make a note of the occasions where you find getting dressed stressful. Is it when you’re meeting clients, doing a work presentation or seeing friends? It’s easy to forget about these occasions until we face the next one.
4.Get dressed with intention (even on quiet days)
You don’t need to be ‘going somewhere’ to deserve to feel good in what you’re wearing. Choosing an outfit you love, even when at home, will impact your mood in a positive way.
5.Care for what you already own
Simple habits like folding knits properly, repairing tears and stains, polishing shoes, or steaming clothes make a huge difference. A well-cared-for wardrobe always looks more stylish, without spending a penny. I suggest creating a maintenance pile and setting aside a day a month to deal with it
Your style doesn’t need a dramatic overhaul to feel refreshed. Small, consistent habits will go a long way to update it with minimal effort.
If you’d like support putting these habits into practice, I’d be happy to help. January is the perfect time to commit to sorting your wardrobe and style. The confidence and positivity this brings is transformative with benefits that last for years.
